Tatar raids on Ukraine: 1438 – 1478

Nicholas Zharkikh

For the specified period, the main source about the Tatar attacks on the right-bank Ukraine is Jan Długosz’s chronicle, and this determines the chronological framework of the work.

In the work, it is quite often mentioned that the settlement is located in such and such a district. Such mentions referred to the district division, which was in effect before the administrative reform of 2020.

I express my sincere gratitude to Viktor Talakh for his help in translating texts from difficult for me foreign languages; he also submitted important comments and observations to the events under consideration.

Conclusions from conclusions

1. There were 16 attacks during the period under review. 15 were carried out by Tatars, 1 by Turks.

2. The score of field skirmishes between the Tatars and the Poles was 3:2 in favor of the Tatars, the score of successful and unsuccessful attacks on castles was equal – 3:3.

3. The troops of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had no skirmishes with the Tatars.

4. The main result of the attacks was the formation of the "Tatar border", which at that time covered almost the entire territory of modern Ukraine, and Tatars felt free on this territory.
