So you – the webmaster who manages an extremely interesting and useful website. You might even manage not one, but ten or twenty sites, all of them interesting and enjoy well-deserved popularity among readers.
These sites may offer you a regular income through selling links.
The subject of trade
Selling links – this figurative expression. To put it more precisely, the subject of trade is the place for placing text links on the pages of your sites. They can be considered as advertising space which demanded by advertisers.
Why do advertisers (in the context of trade links often called optimizers) are buying these places? In order to place them link to their sites (those sites that need to advertise). The more external links pointing to the advertised site – so it is authoritative, the better it works.
Of course, one link will not give a lot of money (the case you administer Google.com and post a link to the root page of a search engine, we do not consider). Links generate revenue when they are many. To manage them smart people design links exchangers – websites where webmasters exhibit for sale their advertising space, and snapping their optimizers. Exchange takes a commission (typically 10%) of SEO and Webmaster. Te rest of money – yours. All satisfied.
More work exchange scheme is as follows. Optimizer determines which web page it will advertise, prepare a list of text links and determines the budget work. All this together is called advertising campaign.
Next optimizer review available on the exchange list of advertising sites, filtering them by a large number of indicators, such as domain name level, subject area, its credibility, the price of a link and others.
In the selected area optimizer puts the requests to purchase, that determines which particular text links appear on the site.
These requests appear in the web interface of web master, who may consider them to accept or reject.
Very often endorsed by the webmaster requests came back to the optimizer, which should make the final purchase decision. This step is necessary because not all web pages are available for viewing during optimizer billing requests. After webmaster's approval of the requests optimizer always has the opportunity to preview the page that will be posted to the link.
If the optimizer has confirmed its intention – transaction is considered successful, sold link appears on the webmaster's site and on his account begin to receive revenue.
Default costs is credited daily, but there are exchanges with other payment schemes.
Each of the above three stages – billing requests, approval by the webmaster and confirmation by optimizer – can be automated. Optimizer can create purchasing machine, which with a given frequency filters available area for a given performance and puts the requests. Webmaster can set automatic confirmation of all applications received (but I do not advise do so). Optimizer may waive its right to final review and set the automatic approval of all applications approved by web masters.
Value of ad places
Each exchanger helps webmaster to set prices on his site, offering average prices on the system for the place with equivalent indicators. Next, the webmaster has the right to set higher prices (assuming that advantageous to have fewer links, but better) or a lower price (considering that the increase in the number of sold links will bring more revenue). Each exchanger have limitations, typically the price can not differ from the average more than 10 times.
The most important factors that determine the reference price – a page rank (PR) and thematic index of citing (TIC). Page rank is calculated by Google search engine individually for each web page. Thematic index of citing is calculated by Yandex search engine for the whole site.
While these number higher, the higher valued this web page to exchange links.
But adequate price – this is only one factor income. Equally important is the number of requests. In exchanger for each ad place are equivalent substitutes, and it is important for us that optimizers buy them on our sites, not equivalent.
To ensure the flow of requests, in addition to the above PR, TIC and prices, weighing such factors as domain name level (the name of the 2nd level is more important), age of the domain name, subject of the site, its presence in authoritative directories and lots of other points.
Very important is the number of external links at the site (the lesser – the better, ideally before the sale page should not have external links).
Different exchangers offer different sets of placement algorithms. Typical of them – pay-per-period placing and placement forever.
In the scheme of pay-per-period optimizer pay, and webmaster receives money for each billing period. For most exchangers accounting period is the one day, but there can be other periods.
In this circuit optimizer has the right to withdraw his link or just stop paying it at any time when he decides that the goal of his campaign reached. Ad places thus released and again becomes available for sale.
With the scheme to pay for good optimizer makes one advance payment to webmaster, posting links, undertakes to keep it at as much as there his site will exists. The size of prepayment typically 6 – 12 times higher than the cost of accommodation for 1 month.
I do not have websites, where accommodation forever would be justified, so I have no experience in this field.
The dynamic equilibrium
When the optimizer places the link, the webmaster does not generally aware of his intentions. My experience is that some links successfully held 2 years or more, and some disappear after a few days.
Therefore, mass of the sold links are in constant motion, and in order to maintain revenues at the appropriate level the new sales for the period have to be equals the number of links, revoced by optimizers. This is called dynamic equilibrium.
My experience shows that the stability of income the stream of new requests should be about 3% per day. That is, if one sold 1000 links, then he should receive 30 new requests per day. If he receive less, than the total number of links decreases, and if more – increases, until the outflow becomes equal to the inflow.
So, work on the placement of links – a permanent webmaster's occupation. By default, exchangers gives webmaster from 3 to 7 days to consider the request. If the webmaster does not respond within that time – the request is automatically deemed to be rejected (and profit from it – lost).
It should also be aware that approval of 30 request a day does not increase the sold links to these 30 pieces. Optimizer may also waive the approved request or may not have time to complete the transaction.
